Proletariat

in the end, i know we're all human
but most of us tend to forget, myself included
and sometimes i have the very same tendencies as my enemies
and my friends have seen the worst of it truly
but when i saw my son for the first time it threw me
and i knew we will get through this together
and maybe even for better
and even if we never forgive or forget or understand
the reasons that we disagree
most of us truly make the same men rich
so listen up neighbors your labor is worthy
and its time to be unruly
hey proletariat!
go on and clock out now!
you want to win this?
come on and tear it down
bless this mess im ready to march
and goddamn their hands for leaving marks
and telling us that everything is going to be okay
and when the runways clear and the streets are filled
and every tin foil hat and oil spill has been cleaned up
and its safe to go outside
maybe then we'll be alright
they got money to burn, they got money to spend
they got money they earned, they got money to lend
we got money we owe, but no money to grow
its only money we know, its only money we know
they got our worth in hands that never worked a day
in their goddamn lives but they make us pay
for the things they take and the lives they break
but its not okay, no its not okay

Mill Town

she grew up in a mill town where the rich now live in lofts
two stories or more from the floor where her grandfather died on the job
moved away at 18, came back when she was 23
after her mother's funeral, and the only things that she could see
were the dead mills lit up for new owners
and her mother who couldnt get an organ donor
and the hospital bed where they didnt want to keep her
and the floor where everybody dies
shes gonna burn it down tonight
she says "this whole town is a miracle!
how do all of you not go insane?"
everyone says shes crazy but they swear theyll pray
shes not especially spiritual
but she goes to church anyway
she says maybe god will show up someday
because there's hell to pay
for thedead mills lit up for new owners
and her mother who couldnt get an organ donor
and the hospital bed where they didnt want to keep her
and the floor where everybody dies
shes gonna burn it down tonight
with her love and fire and light
shes gonna burn it down tonight
singing "our guts are the same on the inside!
burn it down tonight!
the only way to make it out alive!
they don't care if we survive!
because it's all about the bottom line!"

i was born into his family, boss wants you for himself
works hard to crush the man in me, no other work when you got wealth
spent some time in penitentiary because i got caught stealing bread
he says "just close your eyes and clench your teeth, and i'll make sure that they get fed"
i spent some time in the yard today
and took a bite from a hand that had to pay
when you got nothing you got nothing to lose
except the yellow river game ranch blues
oh i want you to get rid of me
just put me out of my mind
im so conditioned to this misery
they keep me locked up with my kind
but sometimes i go to the beach
and sometimes i can play
as long as i dont see the strings
as long as boss gets paid
i spent some time in the yard today
and took a bite from a hand grenade
when you got nothing you got nothing to lose
except the yellow river game ranch blues

Stone Mountain

i was born in the shadow of a mountain carved to remember
a lost cause and the way men fought to preserve the old Southern agenda
my granddad moved to this state with his bride from Alabama
worked 30 years in an auto plant so we could vacation to Savannah
and we all were fine
til my grandma died
im the son of a man who's walked from Georgia all the way to Maine and
he taught me to play a guitar and said to let your heart feel pain and
he found my mom who told me son to find something to believe in
she said "i dont care what it is, just make sure that you believe it"
and they raised me right
and i turned out fine
but it doesnt take family
and you dont need jesus christ
to know a human being
is still a human being
and it doesnt take much to say
yeah weve had it all wrong
and its time for moving on
and the so-called Glory Days are gone
